Abstract
A clinical study was made on hemorrhagic gastrics of ten cases surgically treated at Kyoungpook
National University Hospital from 1963 to 1969. The age of the patients ranged from twenty-six
to sixty-three and all cases were male.
The precipitating factors were thought to be related to alcohol intake in seven cases and accid
ental swallowing of chemical agent in one. Two were uncertain of their etiology. Three cases were
associated with liver cirrhosis, two with duodenal ulcer, one with duodenal diverticulum and three
with healed gastric ulcer.
The preoperative diagnostic procedures with X-ray study of upper gastrointestine and gastrofib
erscoper gave no yielding inforamtions because of existence of a lot of blood clots in the stomach
cavity. Accordingly, the final diagnosis were obtained by exploratory laparatomy and biopsy of
gastric mucosa.
The emergent surgical intervention was warranted for four cases of massive bleeding. The sur
gical procedures performed were subtotal gastrectomy (five cases), vagotomy and pyloroplasty
(four cases), and vagotomy and pyloroplasty (one case).
The results of surgery were satisfactory and no bleeding had recurred. The postoperative death
of one case ensued due possibly to hepatic coma.
